What should I do when I can't make an effect I want using a design software? For example, I want to create an effect like this http://galenmalek.files.wordpress.com/2 ... d_wave.jpg. I tried but couldn't make it either in Photoshop or Illustrator.

So I am wondering what you guys would do if you come across an effect that's hard to create, especially the really abstract effects like these:
