I was always taught to keep colors separate when designing logos due to the problems they cause when printing on, say for instance, apparel. However, with direct-to-garment printing now available, I'm wondering if I can stop being so strict with myself and relax a bit. The new logo for the 2016 Olympics in Rio is a perfect example, the whole thing is gradients and all the colors are intertwined.

Is there any reason to stick to the old rules? Or can I let some creativity loose now?

Thanks guys :)
